Straight Hair: How to Keep It Smooth and Shiny

Whether it’s for work, school, or a night out with friends, we all want to have silky, straight hair. From curly to wavy to straight hair, everyone can get straight, smooth, shiny hair at home for a fraction of the salon price. All you need are a few tools and supplies to get your hair looking great while saving money!

  1. Shampooing and Conditioning

Use sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to wash and condition your hair. Sulfates are compounds found in shampoos and conditioners such as sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate. They can be extremely damaging to your hair, as well as your skin, scalp, and eyes, and can hinder you from getting that straight, shiny look. Examine the list of ingredients in your current shampoo and conditioner. If sulfates are indicated, substitute sulfate-free goods.

  • Avoid alcohol-containing products, which will dry out your hair and leave it brittle after straightening it.
  • Shampoos and conditioners with clarifying properties should be avoided. These products remove moisture from the strands, resulting in limp, lifeless hair.
  1. Dry your hair with a towel.

Squeeze out any excess water before patting your hair with a microfiber towel, beginning at the roots and working your way down to the tips. Terry fabric towels should be avoided since their tiny fibers can promote frizzy hair. Instead, gently and effectively dry your hair using an old T-shirt or a microfiber towel.

  • Avoid touching or scrunching your hair, as this promotes the curl you’re attempting to control!
  • Dry your hair with calm, smooth motions. Roughly drying your hair might cause it to coil up and become wavy.
  1. Detangle your hair.

A sleek, straight appearance will not work with a snarly mane! To remove tangles from wet hair, use a wide-tooth plastic comb. Begin from the bottom and work your way up to the roots in small portions. After detangling, apply a little amount of leave-in conditioner to the ends, avoiding the inch or two closest to the roots. Your arms may be tired after all of this combing and detangling, but your hair will thank you!

  • Comb your hair many times more to ensure that the conditioner is evenly distributed.
  • Allow your hair to air dry until it is about 80% dry before blow drying the rest of the way.
  • Wet hair can be quite harmful to the hair shaft when blown dry. It can also make your hair overly frizzy and unmanageable, so be patient and wait until your hair is almost completely air-dried before warming up the blow dryer.
  1. Once a week, use deep conditioners or hair masks.

No matter what type of hair you have, you should deep condition it at least once a week to prevent damage and keep it healthy and straight. Hair that is happy and healthy can pull off any hairstyle, wavy or straight.

Deep conditioners and hair masks are quite similar, but a mask usually works on strengthening hair, while a deep conditioner adds “slip,” which means the hair strands become smoother and simpler to disentangle. If you need assistance deciding between the two, see your hairstylist. They’ll be delighted to help you achieve your fashion objectives!

  • Proteins, amino acids, natural oils, and lipids are common elements in hair masks, and they can help strengthen your hair.
  • Hair masks and deep conditioners are available at beauty supply stores, drug stores, and supermarkets.
  • Masks can even be made with components you already have on hand. Simply searching “DIY hair masks” on Google can give you thousands of options.
  1. Make use of a smoothing serum.

Apply a smoothing serum product to your hair before blow drying. Use the product sparingly – a small bit is all you need, especially if you have thin hair. Begin with the roots and work your way down to the tips. For the smoothest, shinier results, apply the serum from root to tip.

  • Use a serum with Moroccan or Argan oil as the main ingredient.
  • Avoid serums that contain alcohol as a component, as alcohol can severely dry out your hair.
